The average adult has 24 individual bones, called vertebrae, that connect with each other through flexible joints, creating the spine. The spine provides several functions including: protecting the spinal cord, providing support for the body, and making movement possible.
The spine is broken down into 4 regions with the following description:
Seven bones in the neck - the cervical spine
12 bones in the chest - the thoracic spine
Five bones in the lower back - the lumbar spine
Bottom of the spine - the sacrum
We typically take our spine for granted until we begin to feel an unknown pain that can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that makes it hard to move. Unfortunately, it can start quickly or it can get worse slowly.
There are many reasons people can have back pain, but you are at greater risk if you are:
Older
Overweight
In poor physical condition
A smoker
Inclined to poor posture
Susceptible to injury
